When was the last time you changed your Apple password? I bet they made you change it because your password doesn't fit into their rules anymore. For example, if you made a basic password 2 years ago and it only consists lowercase letters, it would force you to change it now since the rules have changed and the password you were using before is considered weak. It only forces you to change it on their siteand the Apple Store which explains why you could go for so long without changing it.
