Interesting stuff.
In my country, Albania, this problem was present around 70s to 2000s but much apparent around 70-80s. Even now, in most of the cities and especially in the countryside, parents still have control over children's marriage. At the time of speaking, I am writing this message from my iPhone and do not really have much patience as I'm heading to my aunt, but another time I could write much about this problem as it is a major issue.
This may not be so apparent in the US, UK, germany, France or any other country, but in developing and especially countries with a traditional and known to be a conservative culture, this issue is widely discussed.
