I don't remember what level it learns all of these at, but Finnaut gets Divine Barrier, Water Bomb, and much later Storm Rush. So pretty much no truly reliable water moves that don't also hurt you. I used it my first time because I didn't know any better, and Suffocate helped against Irroadium, as would Divine Barrier if I realized it was Light Screen, but other than that, other water types are better. It does get good defenses, especially special defense, and hp is pretty good. Transforms to Fyngon at level 30.
Sappel I have more positive things to say about. First of all, it begins with Batter Branch, learns Berserk Branch before level 30, and finally gets Nature Dance, so there's never a lack of a same type attack. He also has Power Leaf early on, but that's a special attack. He also gets Assault Tackle, I think in the 30s somewhere, which is a decent Standard move. The line is pretty slow, but has great attack and hp and workable defenses. Especially once it transformed to Junanchel, I was impressed with how hard it hit. True, it was pretty bad at covering its weaknesses, but a lot of mons in this game are due to more limited movepools, so that's nothing new. Transformations are level 25 and 42, if anything, that's the toughest part of this line, being base form until level 25. Hope that info helps, and yikes, good luck grinding for that Octoross fight. Hopefully since you have a bunch of transformed mons already, you won't have to grind as high as other people would to win that.
Regarding Ghoperto, I agree, but it does at least have Fly. Sure, it's a two-turn move technically, but I don't really count it as one, since unless the AI is smart enough to use a stat up or healing move that turn, you're pretty much immune to damage while you're up in the air (I haven't seen any moves that hit through Tunnel and Fly like they do in Pokémon, not even Earthquake on a tunneling mon, I tried). Fly was pretty much all Martiagle had to attack with (batter branch no longer counts post level 35 or so), so this is basically that, with a bit less attack but much better defense, without Hone Blades, but with the ability to put stuff to sleep, Powerfang which is plenty useful on bulky stuff and for catching mons, a cool ability, and a handy immunity to standard attacks. Worth at least a shot imho.
