@slj: if you are willing to take a risk, I'm wondering if this might work, note though that if it doesn't, you'll be stuck without Narrator.
Instead of changing everything in language, just go to the location option and change that. Apparently, this lets you keep everything else as US but will make the location store into your country. However, I am hoping that this will also not bugger up Narrator!
