Yeah, I'm just about to reinstall my Debian VM, and it looks like I'll be doing it using textmode over a virtual serial line connected to a socket (information for setting this up in Fusion is here), because sound support is completely buggered, and my Apex virtual serial port requires device and vendor kernel parameters to even load up the ipaq module correctly. And maybe, just maybe, I'm too lazy or pugnacious to want to spend my life buggering about with things more than I should have to, especially after being spoiled by OS X.
The real reason to use Linux is essentially that one gets easy access to lots of useful software without the hassle of compiling it locally, and that BRLTTY provides kick-ass braille support that no other OS can match. But you still end up in textmode, not a GUI, and you still really need to know what you're doing.
