You can use command-line tools from the p7zip project on OS X, no problem, and there is the above-mentioned Keka which supports fewer formats but does include 7z/LZMA for compression.
Also note that 7zip includes a more efficient deflate implementation than that used by zlib; using 7zip to build ZIP files can still result in more efficiently-compressed ZIP files, even if the target has support only for decompression of ZIP using zlib. There is also AdvanceCOMP, which simply includes the 7zip deflate algorithm to recompress your existing zips, which has been surprisingly good.
