How you get around port blocks depends on the kind of network you are on.
If you go through an HTTP proxy, and you know the address, start by testing to see if the proxy will let you connect to arbitrary hosts and ports. To my surprise, many still do, trusting all clients. With telnet connect to the proxy port (telnet host port) and then type
CONNECT host.example.org:2222 HTTP/1.0
followed by a blank line. If you get a response of 200, and then are connected to your MUD, well, you're off to the races.
Edit: please only circumvent network security policies if you have permission and/or if you believe your intentions are pure. If you're at school and do something naughty, you might get yourself into trouble. (When you're grown up, they put you in prison for silly buggers like that.)
