Regarding the ping: If you are far away from the server, like at the other side of the globe, you'll get a slower ping. That doesn't mean the connection is slow or the server is slow. This is simply because you are far away from the server, and it therefore takes more time to reach your computer.
It's interesting that the server has been down for so long, because the reason for the switch to an other server was because, they needed to start the server on their own when it crashed.
Again, I hope the best for the project, and I hope the server issues get solved. Because server downtime is one way to kill a great project.
