Not all the time, and not with most new anime. But some of the classics like pokemon, Yu gi o and sailor moon to name a few had completely different names for the characters, different sound effects, even certain aspects that were censored or modified to make them more kid-friendly because the Western adaptations have a more kids-orientated target market. Pokemon, for example had completely different names for the main characters. Ash was Satoshi, Misty was Kasumi and Brock was takeshi. Yu gi o has completely different music, many different sound effects and visually, the cards and monsters looked different.
