Thanks chris, I'll try using the beacons to see if they help, though I don't know how that will do when exploring dungeons.
The navigation system could do with a little bit of extra info I think, and especially a way to be slightly less spammy and more consistent over all, indeed I do recall a few years ago I tried a very very very very! early alpha of the game and found a similar issue, especially when you have objects visible over fences and through hedges and what not, which isn't even realistic. I am disappointed that in all the work on the game this wasn't mitigated somewhat, though of course I am just starting out with things and hopefully matters will improve.
