BZR did it. I think people sorta got used to it but it's still a bit complicated when jumping over stuff...
Also, any side scroller that has decent sounds, uses at least some platforming, and puts you into some situations where a bit of strategy may be required is good in my book. some story is also a bonus that will keep me coming back.
