Hi,
Really stupid question, but have you tried using capslock (I'm assuming it has that) to substitute an insert key?
While I'm on that subject, can you get some sort of keyboard help up? This would probably help you quite immensely as the screen reader would read most every key that is pressed - even if it is a function key like play or pause or volume up.
