By static images, do you mean sprites or like static backgrounds? It depends, but usually in the middleware and indie scene's you'll find all kinds of stuff. [Amanita Design] for example puts out a lot of surrealist high rez side scrollers, there's also side scrollers like Kingdoms New Lands, or Katana Zero thats coming out, point and click adventures like Dropsy the Clown, Thimbleweed Park, or Jack Orlando. Not to mention others like Hyperlight Drifter, Enter The Gundgeon, Wizard of Legend, Stardew valley, etc.
