Hi SkyGuardian. You need some vst instruments, but if you want to test how it's working, there are some instruments alredy in reaper. Hear is how i make it: Go to insert menu, press enter on virtual instrument on new track, then select your instrument. Then press alt+b and play something using your keyboard. If it is working correctly, you can make your music, isung midi editor. Go to insert menu, select new midi item. Then go to item menu, then select open in built in midi editor. In editor you can press alt+arrow up and alt+arrow down to select note, i to insert it, alt+shift+arrows left and right to navigate between beats and bars, and spacebar to stop or play. You need to configer your editor, press tab and shift tab to see available options.
Sorri for my bad english, and, i'm newbie in reaper, but my method is working fine.
