It's possible to get to that chest way out in the middle of nowhere. Just get to it quickly and open it before you land.
Totally confused on where you stuck at, but I seem to remember there being a cave out west of the city. Are you willfully going the wrong way?
The only thing you gonna get for running around and killing stuff is sword level which ain't all bad I suppose. It'll make your later fights easier.
