Well, if you're messing with the default scripts, you can possibly break something. But as long as you're not using the whole default.jss as your user-specific default.jss, you'll be fine.
This means that as long as when you open script manager and press CTRL+SHIFT+D and all it says is
use "default.jsb"you'll be fine.
Because this is using the FS default scripts, and then whatever you write after use default.jsb is just added on to it. So, if something breaks, all you need to do is go into your JAWS user directory and delete your user-specific default.jsb file and JAWS will work normally again.
Don't be afraid to break things though, that's how you learn. Back in the day it was a lot easier to break JAWS because there was no such thing as user-specific scripts, and alternate screen readers didn't really exist where you could just kill JAWS, load an alternate and restore the default scripts.
Put it this way: as long as, if you're messing with the default scripts, you don't assign your new scripts to keys that FS is already using, you'll be fine.
If you get a compile error, the new scripts won't even register. So it's not like if you get a compile error your scripts are broken.
