I have to disagree with the Family Heart not being useful. It significantly improves the quality you can expect to get without tearing your hair out.
If you're starting from something with crap stats, then yeah, don't attach it. Breed until you have a baby with 2 or 3 good stats where it counts. Attach the Family Heart to that and breed from it. Sure, you're likely to pull a bad stat, but there's also a good chance of getting the 2 good ones, plus any of the 3 not chosen could randomly be assigned a high number. Sooner or later you'll get something with 3 or 4 good stats. Now put the Family Heart on it instead, or at this point the Gene Emblem if you have it, and keep going until you get one you're happy with. It's a little pricy, but once you're done the main game, it's very easy to hit the Master Stadium for gold.
I've bred plenty of mons with at least 5 stats at remarkable or better this way, and I know some people who strive for even higher and get it.
