Re: Are Blind People in the UK being Ignored

Lol Arjan, the cane thing really is bonkers.

@Dan_Gero, yes that disability adviser was a complete idiot, she was upholding the fact that the university light opera society told me they couldn't have a blind person on stage, and obviously I, not they was in the wrong.

That being said, I never had to really use the disability services for anything academic, since the departmental secretary (who basically ran the department with a rod of iron), would pretty much sort anything I needed sorting.
EG, if I wanted an emailed copy of the booklist as a word format not as PDF, or needed an essay printing to hand in, I just went to the secretary and fixed it with her, and bypassed the idiotic so called "disability adviser" altogether.

I will say one thing I do value about England which I definitely missed whilst living in the states with my lady's family, is a lot of travel arrangement are far easier over here, and for the most part people travelling are okay with those arrangements.

I mentioned train assistance booking, but also airport services, most bus drivers etc. You do sometimes run into trouble with taxi drivers from cultures who are less guide dog friendly, though even there I've sometimes been rather surprised with people's attitudes.

We've not quite got to the point where all busses are legally required to have audio announcements, but I suspect that won't be too long.

I'm also noticing that there is a large percentage of audio described stuff in Britain, indeed cinemas these days are getting to use audio description headsets as a matter of course, which I definitely appreciate, indeed I have a lot of respect for the job done by the audio description service.

so, there are good things about the UK, though the generally less stellar social attitudes can obviously be irritating.
