Okay, so, if an attack is physical (and you can check this with hotkeys), it uses the strength stat. If it's special, it uses the magic attack stat.
So stuff like Drench, Fire Breath, Meteor Rush, will use magic attack, while Earthquake, Assault Tackle, Wing Slash are strength-based.
