in gwave 5, and most likely 6 as well, you can use wildcards. Example **scream1**.
Or, what I've been doing lately is browsing my fx directories, press enter on sounds I think I need, play them in the background thanks to a media player, have the open dialog open in basically any daw, if I find the file I want, copy it (ctrl+c) then paste it right into the file to open edit box.
