The tms5220 speech chip, the same chip used in the echo cards, had been emulated in Mess (now Mame). Naturally, then, it wasn't long until someone decidd to emulate the Echo speech synthesizer, thus its existence within Mess. It's the same process within Dosbox that gives us Soundblaster speech, due to the Soundblaster Live cards bein emulated, only reason they're a pain to use is obviously due to the fact these were all single-channel cards.
