My wife and I do ebay and craigslist all the time. Even when you're sighted you don't always have garantees of receiving the product you actually thought you were going to. That doesn't mean shop without common sense though, so @2 is actually correct on this one. If you can have someone sighted lookinat the items you're interested in you have a good start.
As far as other things like Walmart and such are concerned, our method is pretty simple; we may go find the item at a local store to see if we can look at it beforehand but actually purchase it online if we end up liking it. Another thing is either reading posts with ratings or watching youtube vids on a particular product if you can find any.
