@5, MD itself doesn't support this I don't thin, but MMD (Multi Markdown) does. I use a mix of the 2 depending on which syntax is cleanest for any given task, and I tend to use IAWriter on iOS and Mac that supports both so it's a natural transition between the 2. It just so happens that Pandoc supports both MMD and MD.
As for transclusion, it's the ability to, say, writer a book and split the chapters into multiple files, and then create a master file that only has references to each chapter in order. When you export this master file, it exports all its references too so you end up with the entire book in HTML or whatever format you like. It makes it easier to write large projects because each section is its own file, and there's no need to edit the master file when there's only a specific section you need fixed. All you need to thence is plop in the master file as your input and the program will search for all dependencies and take care of the rest. It's quite nice.
