Yeah, I also think de-essers are multiband compressors tweaked for sibilants. I've only messed with them a little, but if the output sounds filtered, you're probably using 1, too aggressive settings, 2, wrong settings, or 3 a bad plug-in. Nothing wrong with wideband compression when it works, but if you rproblem is that consonsants are too loud, that's what de-essers are meant for.
