Re: surviving an apocalypse...
I agree with fastfinge's first point. Learn stuff... and a lot of it! In a completely worst case situation, you could find yourself alone, and I'm not sure what to tell you. That is only the worst case though. If you end up with even one person with you, or hopefully a group, knowledge can be your way to earn your keep.
It may be a bit far fetched to use this example, but lets pretend I have found myself in a desperate survival situation. I watch a lot of those survival shows, watch survival videos online, and have read quite a bit on the matter. The information from those sources (gathered over the years) would undoubtedly help me survive... yet none of those authors or TV personalities are actually a part of my survival group. They have not physically helped me in any way, yet their knowledge alone has been invaluable.
If you were part of a group trying to survive, even if you couldn't head out scavenging for s upplies, you could feed them information that they did not know. You would have the same impact on their survival as those authors and TV personalities have had on me. It's hard to even say what information will be helpful to know, because sometimes the most random piece of information would make the difference. Just learn a bit of everything, and brainstorm ways it could help out in different situations. A guy in your team eats some plants and clearly seems to have been poisoned... chewing up and eating charcoal (the black, NOT white) from yesterday's fire can lessen the poison's effects. To avoid that later, test a plant by putting a small piece between your lip and teeth and let it sit there for a while. If the plant ends up being dangerous, it will tingle or burn your lip over time. You could easily be the guy who saves the day, on a regular basis, if you know things the others don't know.
