There is nothing I've seen in the ap itself about step tracking with an Apple watch, you still need to stick your Iphone in your pocket as far as I'm aware, though it might use the location information from Apple watch to check Gps positioning, of course that's not too helpful if your running on a mini trampoline or a treadmill or whatever.
