Re: why do we fear the blind?
Hmm...
the main issue here is simple: the group of blind people (not visually impaired but blind) is so small world wide, so people simply don't meet any blind people very often.
In my city which is pretty big, I am the only blind person in the 20's. the two next is around the 40's and then there are some older people as well. the issue is that we are only three blind people who are walking on our own in the city every day. Three blind people out of 50.000 people or more in a town. For this reason, sighted people feer us blind folk, because they never meet us. People feer the unknown!
Nearly every day, I experience that many people are afraid to even talk to me. They just stand still there and do nothing. Other people goes quickly away, others trys to avoid me. Gladly, most people take me like all other people and are just nice and helpful and don't run away, which really makes me happy.
I have learned to live with that which sometimes can b
e difficult, but then I always think about how many awesome and helpful people I meet all places.
then, peoples reaction is of course always depending on how the blind people are. How they contact people, how they walk, what they looks like and all that stuff.
I don't like the article very much, because I think it can make the wrong impression about blind people if people don't read the full article. Things could have been written in other ways.
