Yeah, there are much faster ways of earning 50K experience that don't involve a five minute walk, a long and drawn out boss fight and several minutes of credits.
One of witch is just to fight ten or so enemies in post game. Another is to transfer money to Stella and buy level up herbs at half price.
Yeah, Lucy/ Simon are given Final Oblivion only to have its benefit entirely mitigated by bosses who can inflict mass damage to him alone. Say what you will about this from a game design standpoint, but Shauna is better anyway. Sure, she might not be able to do quite as much damage as Simon would, but her final spell is very powerful combined with the ability to boost her stats to the point of being virtually indestructible without much effort.
