Going to confirm the last post. I had a Zildjian ride cymbal with a very clean bell sound that I loved just about to death. It was big and heavy but worked like a charm. If you want an idea of the sort of thing I'm talking about, the closest approximation I can get is the ride Guns n' Roses drummer uses on Appetite to Destruction and Use Your Illusions 1 and 2. I love that sound for rock.
But then again, both my crash cymbals were Sabian, and I adored them as well.
At the end of the day I'm not quite knowledgeable enough to be married to a particular brand, but I know the sort of sounds I like. The best thing you can do is get a chance to hit one a little before you buy it. I would never dream of buying drums, especially, without getting a chance to play them live first. No chance.
