If you're running on a VPS setting up SSL with letsencrypt takes a few minutes. If you're running on something else and your host isn't giving you an SSL cert, you should switch hosts because they're not reputable.
These days Chrome and possibly also Firefox give big "this site is insecure" warnings for this stuff, you just can't see them because it shows up next to the address bar and doesn't steal focus.
For read-only sites, i.e. a blog, it's not that big a deal except that all your sighted readers will know you don't have it, and not in a nuanced this is actually fine way but in a this can hack my computer o my god scary warning way. For absolutely anything else at all, entering data into forms, downloading software, etc. SSL is a really big deal.
