Well if you want online battles and training and catching I can only recommend getting a modern console like the 3ds or switch and one of the recent pokemon games like sun and moon or sword and shield. Not even sure if you can still battle online with the games from gen 4 from the ds era anymore, but if you can then that's probably a cheaper alternative.
