Ranged weapons are something I have thought of in the past, and have some design notes on them. Possibly, now that summoned minions and group-based combat is playing more of a role than it did 5 years ago, there might be a place for bows: weapons you can attack with, only if you are not the one being targetted. It is something that I will (continue to) keep in mind.
Regarding throw, I'm not sure why it's not working for you. It's a skill that is used quite regularly. Next time you are online, just ask someone to come look at your equipment and skills and say what's wrong. It's probably just some minor thing, like your weapon is sheathed rather than wielded, or you have the wrong type of axe.
Also, the combat is not *entirely* melee. There is a fairly extensive magic system.
