The way StreamingGenerator works is by buffering a bunch of audio at the beginning (I believe around 100MS) and then playing back while maintaining that latency.  The actual startup latency of it is less, and depends on how fast the underlying stream/decoding is able to prefill the buffer (i.e. the CPU of the computer, is it an SSD, in future is it over the network).  There's no particular reason you can't connect it to a Source3D as long as the variable startup latency isn't a problem.  The real limitation is that they're 1 thread each and if you make a bunch all pointing at .flac files or something, it can probably overwhelm someone with an HDD and also take a bunch of CPU time as well.

That said, after startup, seeking has a latency of 100MS, so if seeking promptly matters then yeah, don't do that.

The rest of what you're saying is correct.

I will add: I don't validate this yet but don't use a generator with more than one source, the results will vary from broken audio to crashing but it definitely won't do what you want.
