Definitely some bias and knowledge gaps here, but still very informative.
Where is DecTalk or LiteTalk in all of this though? For most of my elementary school years, that is what I used. It was a little box with a speaker that you had to turn on, and once you did, you could do things like word processing and file retrieval and such. I was definitely not a power user back in those days.
