Re: Rpg with out coding? That's possible?

wow, didn't know Sable is written in BGT. that is incredibly disapointing, and pretty much means mods are out of the question.

even so, I'd like to defend Sable a bit, since in this thread everyone seems to be overly critical of it.

It isn't a perfect tool for creating RPGs by any means, but imo it seems to do a good enough job of being an RPG creation tool.

You can definitely say the game mechanics wouldn't be different between different Sable games, but I don't actually see that being a huge problem. namely for 2 reasons.

firstly, having the same mechanics between different games would eliminate the annoying initial reading of a readme file to figure out the game controls. so once you learn controls for one sable game, you know them for all sable games. so, from one perspective this is a small advantage.

secondly, I don't actually think having massively unique mechanics between different RPG gamesis the issue in our community. The issue is lack of content. not enough story to go through. not enough levels, maps, etc. So I'd rather have a 100 hours of story content in different interesting fantasy/sci-fi worlds with the same mechanics, rather than 10 hours of content between 10 different RPGs that each have wildly unique mechanics. for me, content > mechanics in RPGs.

The other thing is that I don't necessarily want programmers creating the content of RPGs. I'd rather have that be done by writers. I understand a person can be both a programmer and a writer, but there are lots of creative writers out there that culd create some great RPGs, but just don't have the programming skills. having a no code platform like sable changes that.

I think having a platform for non-programmers to create RPGs is more valuable than having a platform that is very flexible and powerful but is only accessible to experienced programmers.

again, not saying sable is some pinnacle of such a thing, but at least it is a start. the only alternative is writing choice of games or interactivve fiction, which I would argue are less featureful than what sable offers.
