Re: Azerbaijan and Armenia war

@26
World War I wasn't that bad compared to World War II.  Even at the beginning of World War II, the world was very different.  The worst that you could do with a bomb or whatever at the beginning of World War II was maybe 10000 deaths in one go if you tried really hard.  You should read up on how the people who launched the first nukes felt.  World War II went from wars being kind of bad but tolerable, to one pilot literally obliterating an entire city with one button.  And then we kept developing those weapons since.  You don't have a war when neither side can win and when both sides are sane.  Come back if a developed nation gets someone like Kim Jong Un at the helm and you might have an argument.

World War I and World War II were winnable.  You could damage your enemy without obliterating them off the map, and didn't have to worry about being obliterated first.  You could say "well we're going to have some battles over the next few months until someone surrenders" and there'd be someone to surrender at the end.  But right now, all the first world nations have the firepower to hit any other nation on the planet without even getting out the army, and a shit to of automated and/or mostly automated systems in place so that if someone hits first, they'll hit back even if you obliterate the entire government off the face of the earth.  SO even if you, say, took out the U.S., even if the U.S. lost, you're still getting hit back just as bad to do it.  Start World War III and you literally have no hope of winning, the best you can do is make sure  the other guy loses too.  No one wants to do that.  There's no sane scenario in which it gets *anyone* involved what they want.  World War I and World War II had the ability for a winner to, well, win.  And that made them worth it for some definition of worth.  Say two first world countries have at it with the nukes.  No one else is going to step in, because then instead of 2 people losing, 3 people lose, or 4, or 5, or however many.

Nukes ended World War II because for the first time in human history, someone had the power to literally end the world.  I'm not sure how you don't get that that permanently changed things.  When the Cold War happened, people weren't all excited to fight or anything, they were in a place where everyone involved was afraid that someone else would act.  it wasn't "Russia will beat America" or anything, it was both America and Russia being afraid the other would fire first, preparing to react, and in the process raising the tensions.  We've spent something like 50 years since then putting stuff in place to make sure it can't happen again.  There's no way that a spat between two ultimately inconsequential countries drags the whole world in and then nuclear Armageddon or something.  It can't happen.  It's not worth it to anyone at all.  if it was going to happen it'd have happened by now.  There's always, always a little war like this going on, sad as that is to say.  This is just the first one you've cared about, or something.
