If your programmer friends don't know AI stuff they can't just modify these models. The coding isn't the difficult part. The chances of modifying something someone else developed and ending up with something better in the machine learning space are small. The people behind those don't put out a subpar version, they put out the best version that they can, and they're way more knowledgeable than any of us on how to do it.
The VPS will also be very pricey.
I'd develop this as a tool that people can run on their own machines. You have the disadvantage that they'll probably need a GPU but the advantage that the compute for this is really expensive and you didn't have to pay for it.
If you have people with the requisite knowledge, you may be able to get a small version off the ground, but it will fall over as soon as it gets even a little bit popular. You can't run this on one VPS. You have to design for high availability and horizontal scalability and stuff, which probably means deployment of a task queue and multiple workers, and then you get to the part where you need dynamic scalability if it's not going to drain the bank account. Also, you'll need to let people upload and download from the site, not send via e-mail: most e-mail providers don't like big files going back and forth.
This is doable, I just highly doubt you understand the scope of what you're proposing. This isn't nginx and a couple Python scripts glued together with php or something and your programmer friend modified the script and suddenly it's better than the PHDs behind it in the first place.
