Media Players that Read Subtitles, and a Legal Way to Download Anime

Hello folks.

I've recently been getting into Naruto and Kamen Rider (well, researching is a better word to describe my interest in the latter) and I need an easy-to-use media player to read video subtitles on Windows and Mac.
I've heard the LION NVDA add-on could do this, but I don't know how well it works with, say, VLC, let alone in a virtual machine.
Also, a legal way to download anime and Tokusatsu without resorting to nefarious means would be nice. Otherwise, the media player wouldn't be very useful, now would it?
