Re: Seriously, what is it you guys want?

@65 and 66:

It is also a quantity issue. The biggest part of the video game market even for sighted people also consists of mindless, poor quality clones with no risks taken. Because innovation is risky, what if people don't like your idea?
Instead they just reiterate the same proven mechanics, shamelessly copy other successful games and only improve on game size or graphics quality.

The innovation comes either from gigantic publishers who can even afford to lose dozens of million dollars on a failed product (rarely the case but you have people like Rockstar for this) or from a handful of indie developers who don't have anything to lose at all.
But they firstly can draw on the much broader collective development experience from the really huge pool of already existing games and secondly they kind of have to shine with innovation to stick out from the million of contenders for your average gamer attention.
It is like evolution. The bigger the gene pool the more likely it is to improve. The only difference is: we have the opportunity to control this change.

Our game market has to grow out of entropic evolution and into gene manipulation. But for that people have to actually start thinking about games in a much more abstract way and therefor need to really understand games and gaming. I seriously miss the meta communication about games. No one seems to care about game theory here, they always talk about features and implementation - so about the how, never about the why.
That's the other reason why we don't have audio game innovation. In order to change something you have to understand it first. Most people here including a sizeable part of the devs don't understand games at all. It is frustrating at times why this post transformed into another disconnected rant instead of the constructive, well structured post I first wanted to write. Have fun dealing with it tongue
