Re: installing ubuntu without killing windows in the process?

From what you described, it looks like the problem is simply that you did not select the correct option in the boot menu. Ubuntu's default configuration has I believe 4 options, such as recovery mode, memory test, etc, though I don't recall exactly; I use arch and don't plan on switching. So, from the boot menu you'd press the down arrow four times to get to Windows, then enter. By default Ubuntu and many other Linux distros install grub, which is a flexible bootloader capable of booting many different operating systems, with much more functionality than the Windows boot manager. Thus, simply deleting your linux partitions will not restore Windows, and probably broke Grub as well, since its configuration files are usually located in /boot on the Linux root partition. If you've not done anything further to the hard drive, you can try reinstalling Ubuntu with exactly the same settings as before and you should be able to access Windows, provided that partitio n hasn't been messed with. You should become familiar with grub and have at least a basic understanding of the architecture of Linux before attempting to install it on your HDD, unless you really don't care what happens, so I suggest doing some research before jumping to the conclusion that Windows is useless.
