If all you did was just slap it on the track, yeah, that won't work because the data is there, but there's nothing to play it. You need to throw a virtual instrument on the same track, or on a different one and set up a midi send. This can be anything, including something like Sforzando that can play sf2 files. But if you go the soundfont route, you actually need a sound font loaded in or you'll get nothing.

The easiest way to set up a virtual instrument is to go to insert > insert virtual instrument on new track. This does the steps of arming the track, turning on the monitoring if it isn't already, and switching the output to all channels midi with all midi sources automatically for you. If you just added it as an effect to an already existing track, you would have to do these things yourself, or you would get no audio.
