Re: No Harry Potter MUDs

I'll elaborate:

If you have anHP MUD, okay, fine, but how would you adapt the books/movies into a text based game, how would you capture the feeling of it. How would you make it enjoyable for people?

That's why I said it's a lot easier, but...it's more MUSH/MUX teritory because you don't have to basically code a metric boatmoad of systems and cram them into an existing codebase, and hope it all works. It is a hell of a lot easier to just @dig a lot of rooms, @desc and @so on, and say alright, now go RP, than have to fight with Diku or Smaug or TBAMUD or LP or whatever codebase you are using, then have to code in a whole system for, say, Qudditch, or spend hours tweaking the magic systems or custom writing your own.

What I'm saying is, it's extremely hard to take a universe that is as expansive as HP, or Dresden Files, or....pick your multi layered fictional universe here.

Now sit down, and draw up how systems are going to work. Done that? Good. Now you have to code al the systems. Done /that/ and not gone insane yet from coding it all, and fighting with MUD codebases? And you're not dead of alcohol poisoning? Alright.

Now you get to squash all the bugs in your code, and then...you open it up for players.

Have fun dealing with all sorts of players, the trols, the Potternerds who go oh but this isn't right, it should be like this or this or this when you know ful well you can't get that to work because of code limits in your codebase of choice. Then you get the powergamey motherfucking shits who just want all the shinies right /now/ and no work for it. You get the people who TS in public and don't care at all, you get the people who run around atacking everyone because ooooh look I can do cool spels sort.

So enjoy dealing with al those. sSo you want to bring folks on to help. Rightt. So that's another can of worms. How can you trust them not to give their friends all the cool things that are supposed to be worked hard for?

So in short. It. Is. Not. Worth. All. The. Hassle.

EDIT: Oh and have fun dealing with exploiters, griefers, et cetera to and the thorny isue of /technically/ you are at the mercy of JKR/publishers/movie studios who can take you down at a moment's notice with a DMCA if you're on somebody else's host, to.
