Not new, it seems. There's a comment on the video from someone whos done it years ago, offered some tips on refining the yield and quality, so maybe not widely known? Most commercial methods for gem synthesis may use different approaches for higher yield and quality, but that may depend on refining his process. Using microwaves for creating Plasma, with grapes actually, is also a common science experiment. Its often how plasmas can be created, and is actually a major component of how the VASIMR Plasma Rocket works, generating plasma using microwaves and containing it in an electromagnetic field for ejection out the nozzle.
