I won't go too far into this, but yes, it's becoming more toxic and more polarizing. This is largely because politicians have begun to realize just how easy it is to protect one another when they do bad things. This leads to them doing more bad things, then getting away with it.
Case in point: Mitch McConnell can say with a straight face that Trump is guilty of everything he's accused of, yet stood to acquit due to constitutional technicalities, setting the precedent that any future politicians can set as many fires as they want, as long as they're out the door by the time they're asked to answer for their actions. Never mind that said politicians still might hold influence, or might be able to run for office again.
It's also a product of activism. People are sick and fucking tired of a broken, unfair, unrealistic, untenable status quo. The people who support it have to get louder and more bombastic to counter the rhetoric of progressives, and the progressives, in turn, feel they also have to get louder and more bombastic in order to prove their points and maintain their voices. Many of them, for one reason or other, have been silenced, cancelled, minimized, pushed aside or in some other way marginalized in the past, and may still be experiencing this today. It results in a culture where disagreement is dangerous and where loyalty matters more than either logic or love.
