reasons for learning typescript

off and on for the past couple of months I have looked at web development and stuff like that. A lot of people are choosing to learn typescript it seems but  (Besides the types) what's the point in using it? Doesn't it have to be compiled back to regular _javascript_ anyways? wouldn't it just be simpler to use plain js? or am I missing something?
