You have to tipe everything but the commands aren't that complicated and it's much less to write than in case of a mud for example. As far as the sounds go you will be able to hear them just as before, they wont be removed. Playing using text the spire feels more like a choice based game than the constant tiping you encounter with muds. I would say give it a try, maybe you'll like it this way aswell.
Edit: and there are some cool mods that work with text the spire, such as downfall, man it's really awesome playing as slime!
