the leveling was changed several times, so it is not really explained anywhere currently, but here is the basic idea:
Each card has a specified level which is announced when you read it's description with the E key. For example, if a card is fire 4, it means you need level 4 to use it in the fire type. But how do you gain levels?
Essentially, at the beginning of your turn, if you have at least 4 cards of a certain type, you gain a level in that type. At any time, if you have a card of a type you can't use, you can discard it. This will give you plus 2 level in the type of that card.
Each type also has a card to increase it's level by 3, which can be played as long as you are this particular type. Such cards are normalisation for normal, salutation for fighting, shady mind for dark and so on.
Thus, probably you have discarded a card and gained a level, or had 4 cards but not so in the other battle.
