Looking at that code, it seems that the play function is being stacked more than once when it doesn't need to. Why don' you just call a subfunction to manage combat so that when it ends, the main loop continues as normal? If you have a main loop within a main loop within a main loop it will be problematic. I could be wrong about this though.
