Hmm I have never had this problem with the game. When you run it do you have other windows open? Because this forces the game to run in something called windowed mode which for some reason causes the game to act up. I would recommend that you close all windows that are not being used open death match and see how that works. I'm surprised that the game didn't alert you to this since if you have a few windows open it will warn you about running in windowed mode and give you the option to exit and close other windows.
I have no idea what could be causing the lack of footstep sounds I've never had this problem. To use the battery on the door go to it's position and press i to open your inventory. The battery will be the only thing there press enter on it then press enter to open the door and you can continue. Just in case you get it to work I will give you a rundown of the keys.
i, opens the inventory menu unless you aren't carrying any
thing.
Left and right arrows, walk left or right
up and down arrows, let's you climb up and down a ladder if your near one
control+left or right arrows, let's you walk quickly to the left or right
enter, opens doors or activates items or other things
shift activates the auto-targeting mode
shift+control, fires your weapon
shift+t, uses the tractor beam to tractor things into place
shift+j, let's you use your jet pack to jump over things
q, use medkit if you have one because they don't appear in your inventory
z, check how many credits you have
H, checks your health
a, checks how much ammo and clips you have
Well that should be everything.
