Dark, depending on how he's got his code laid out, adding exploration stuff later, or hunger/thirst stuff later, or any of a dozen other mechanics, wouldn't necessarily be difficult. Combat is its own kettle of fish, and anything added to combat has to be tweaked and tested since the game will probably be driven by its combat, like it or not. However, the other things are tangential, as the topic creator said...which is to say that he could conceivably focus mostly on combat to improve the raw playability of the demo, and then, so long as he didn't lose focus, write all the other side stuff that does not depend on combat.
